Case study: Reverse-engineering a replacement bronze bushing

by Matt Van DamMarch 15, 2022

A global automotive supplier of injection molded components—with a West Michigan facility—recently reached out to GELOCK due to an issue with a failed bronze bushing.

The Problem

We shifted our schedule and arrived on-site the same day to evaluate the entirety of the failure. An apparent loss of lubrication had caused the closing plate guide rod bushing to fail—in spectacular fashion, causing an incredible mess.

Our team was able to rig and remove the damaged bushing and guide rod.

GELOCK's Solution

We then used our in-house machine shop to reverse engineer a replacement bushing—all before the OEM could even prepare a quote for the client!

We went the extra mile to thoroughly clean the entire area, ensuring the environment was clean and free of contamination.

From there, our repair technicians installed the bushing and guide rod, verifying proper distribution of grease to the bushing.

Thanks to GELOCK's full-service team, we completed this project from start to finish before the client even heard back from the OEM. And we ensured this kind of failure won't happen again, by troubleshooting the lube system.
