Case study: Shape Corp.

by Matt Van DamOctober 14, 2021

Shape Corp—with multiple locations in Grand Haven, Michigan—is a full service, tier-one automotive and industrial component supplier. Their engineering teams design, test and analyze metal, plastic, and hybrid components and systems.

The Request

Shape Corp. reached out to us at GELOCK to ask if we could rebuild the injection unit on their 1,000 ton Husky plastic injection molding machine.

GELOCK's Solution

The diverse skill set of our team allowed us to rig the injection unit from the frame and load it onto our truck, eliminating the need to involve outside riggers. While the team at Shape Corp. supplied the majority of the necessary parts, we did utilize our robust vendor network to source, supply, and expedite some missing items.

It was a very difficult injection unit repair involving multiple seals, O-rings, guide rings and bearings.

Once assembly was complete, we rigged and installed the injection unit. All the leaks were successfully resolved and the machine is again producing parts.

In all, GELOCK completed this project in one third the quoted timeline from the OEM.
